Her signature
style of gestural washes featuring featureless figures remains part
of her oeuvre, although she now gives her images a new vigor and
better defined sense of space. Goldsmith branches out to do some
abstractions inspired by gardens and still lifes and even studio
clutter. Several quasi-oriental abstractions reveal a sensitive
regard for arrangement. Using black, beige-on-white paper with a
single, bright color accent, she turns ambiguous spatial relationships
into a strength, her gestural control elegantly freewheeling and
only hinting at identifiable imagery. The vivid color focal point,
loosely recognized as grapes, apples or some other fruit or vegetable,
serves as an off center pivot to the composition.
